From my previous post I introduce my new design, the Flat Earth ring aroused my sci-fi juice in me, which leaves me to wonder what if I can introduce a mechanical element to the current Alphabet ring series. After a long search for a concept, here I post my new design for the Alphabet-G.
We have come a long way to learn the alternative theory of the newly proved evidence that the flat earth is the most solid wakening truth we have learned by this far. With a little logic and some simple science will make this spinning ball at 1000 km/h theory to be absolute nonsense. To even accept it at some point in my life previously just put me to shame as to how I didn’t ask the obvious question of logic. Or maybe I did, I might be too busy pouring that last pint down my throat. For many years there had been numerous debates over by the flat earth and the sphere earth communities. It really is a butcher ground to just watch both sides engage under the subject of discussion. You can see what is happening at the end of the day is that we do not really have the hard evidence to show the non-believer the earth is flat till one of us; common people venture out to the edge of the world to locate this Firmament of the dome, bring back the evidence and people might just call it a fake. Are you seeing the ironic part of the debate? People, in general, will believe in what they believe. Even some evidence is very convincing and will crush any doubt in any sane mind, September 11 anybody? Still, these day-dream-zombies will tell you stories that make you wonder what they are smoking.
The idea beyond the end of the flat earth
It was told back in the ancient time in maps and writings that the earth is flat as such with sun, moon and the stars enclosed within the dome for a very long time. How long was that? Nobody knows. Who builds it? Through research can tell you The Flammarion engraving was found first appear in a book of Camille Flammarion in 1888. A depiction of a man travels to the end of the world and reach out to the other side, how strange is that for ancient people to create art on such subject. Even more strange the engraving founded in wood form, nobody really knows who made it and its origin. We might never know how long the dome has been there since the dawn of mankind. There are other maps like one from China depicted land mass beyond our world as large as America or Australia. This only makes me more curious to ask “what are we doing inside here?” Are we being punished? What are those lands beyond us? Is it a Land of Gods?
The prison concept
If all these newly presented concepts are elusive as it sounds, to grasp this absurdity-somehow-make-sense theory, I would strongly recommend The Thirteen Floor. Though it might be a little old since its production was back in 1999, it is still worth the ride down the memory lane. After the actor discover the end of the world and all this life was just a software program exists in a simulation all hell went loose, simple and clean, my kind of movie. To imagine and accept we are people living under a huge dome that prevents us from going beyond this point might be ok for me but, for people who demand more like the quest for God and all that religion teaching might not be easily be sway off their feet with this cheap talk of God watching from above the dome of eternity. It really boils down to how you see yourself. So those talks about Karma might be true. If you are in sales, you might want to think twice about the rules of engagement.
The making of the Flat Earth Ring
For me, I’m happily enjoying my research, celebrating life as it is. Every day is a beautiful day, more interesting things happen in each step I took, I try to live life to the fullest and not to dwell on regrets and hate. In celebration, I had incorporated the flat earth theory to my equation of my life perspective, what does that mean? I don’t know. But I do know, never will I go back to be a fool and just take the answer as it is from the media. Some answers require you to seek it out, and through the life journey of seeking the truth, I want a symbol that I can represent my belief and hence I made the Flat Earth Ring. Currently, it is not in production yet. You can purchase in the near future. As for the truth, I leave it to you to decide. I wish you well and thank you for reading.
Here are my thoughts and ideas behind the Alphabet-F ring
My initial concept for this piece was meant to be more ridge, more clean lines to connect the Alphabet-F. Along the way, I felt I wanted to take this opportunity to try out something more incline towards the randomness of things rather the more predictable pattern of creating the Alphabet series.
In this Alphabet-F ring, it does evolve from the Alphabet-E ring, which I first introduce the folding surface style. This piece is different from the E ring is because of the uneven slope, guided by the unparalleled lines to form the face of F.
Folding style of the face
This in result in series of uneven surface reflecting off different intensity of light, bringing the curious beholder to ask the question of what is the meaning behind these mysterious geometries.
The side of the Alphabet-F ring design
I’m always careful not to overwhelm the ring side design and also not to deviate too far from the principle of the face. I want it to suggest the shape of F and yet in harmonic compliment with each other. With this idea in mind, I cutted deep into the front face from left to the upper right so this result with a slant recess to the supposily flat surface.
The subtle side curve
You maybe assume the side recess of the ring to be just an ordinary straight cut right into the cold metal but, this is not how I want to end the story in designing this ring. I got this idea to have this gradient cast of light into the recess, so I made it to be a curve recess into the metal, like a disk that crash right into it, only to be half way through stuck on the surface and fall off.
The bridge that form the Alphabet-F ring
An arch metal bar was erect over the slant recess like a bridge over a river to form the backbone of the F. When view at an angle with the side and the face together, you can see how these two facet truly blend in harmony.
The alphabet-E ring was an idea inspired by science fiction spaceship design. In this particular piece I used angle-bending-chamfered style to create the various shades of surface that form the shape of Alphabet-E. The style totally different from my previous piece that uses the up, down steps to cast shadow on the subject I intended to express.
Alphabet-E ring new design element
In this piece I used an element I had never used before. It is a risk to take, however I was very comfortable about how it eventually falls into place. You can see the bending of a roof like arc that stretches across the face of the ring. This arch casts the shadow to produce this unnatural vertical curve line over the Alphabet-E. Unnatural as it may sounds, I really like this new element, exploring new possibilities is what make this project fun.
The three bars of E
At midsection of the ring face, we have this three horizontal lines that sits on it to form the three bars of the Alphabet-E. I pulled in the middle bar to make it a little shorter for easy recognition of the letter. I do not want the bars to terminate at the far end right, so I stop in ¾ of the face and created a slope to separate the two sections. From here I do not want to have the three bars identical styles as to the E, I proceed to have four bars set in to create the illusion of friction of the two selections.
Alphabet-E Ring Slope Direction
The side design
To be true, it was such a challenge to conceive an idea of how to design the side of the ring. So many versions I had put forth to maintain a form that can have that logical connection, but nothing had resulted in what I want. I even created as detail as possible of mechanical parts to adhere to the side as protrusion, for that, I didn’t look as good. Eventually I ended up settling down for a simple ring lines that will have that alphabet-E connection and yet easy to the eyes.
My thoughts and ideas behind the Alphabet-D ring design
In every edition, I try to add some new idea to the ring design. Alphabet-D Ring does have something new that separate itself from the rest. Apart from the usual, this ring offer the unique cascading wave light patter on the surface starting from left to right.
Alphabet-D ring progressive wave
As each steps progress from the center of the D, the wave of the outer curvature advance to the right, with each step slightly bended to create that smooth water like wave. You can find each wave have that irregular widening transition to the right from curve to straight line.
This wave can only be described as the water surface and to widen the imagination a little more, I added a mast. At the top you will see this very peculiar protrusion that extent itself from the center of the D to end at the top that connects with a triangle flat head. There were few versions of the mast, but I like this more. The trick is not to make it too obvious; I suppose this is not in anyway going to be like some sort to extraterrestrial communication devise.
From this angle you can see the mast does catches the eye to light up the imagination. I must say this is the most peculiar design I ever did. On the side here I design a series of recess niche to provide that friction like texture that that will draw the eye to the face.
Notice I kept that elongate D shape on each niche on the side.
I suppose the challenge is to make the C connect with every previous element and yet do not over craft it or super simplify it. If you know what I mean, look around you, a lot of things can look like C if you pay attention to the environment. If over simplify the C might become difficult to recognize.
The special curve edge
For that, I round off at the end of the two points of the C to create uniqueness, to bring about a question of why it is round at the edge so that, the inner curve of the C will blend well with continuous flow from end to end.
Within that rectangular frame, I set in the curve of the C starting from the left side of the ring, leaving the curve of the C to repeat the cascading effect on both sides. On the inside of the C, recess is deeper than the outer curve. It is easier to emphasize the inner C than the outer.
Alphabet-C ring new element design
From this point may I introduce you a new element I had never deploy before, the bending edge of the inner circle. By this new technique can clearly bring about the distinction of the letter C which was deliberately set into the centre stage of the ring face.
Another clear distinction from my other design is this new element that cut through the core of the ring, leaving a suspend face with the element of lightness. You must admit the resemblance is very much close as the letter C, note how that hollow empty space of an imperfect circle that form the letter.
Alphabet-B ring design main distinctive element is the two rounds curvatures that form the letter, complete with the vertical line down as a backbone.
You can find this on the far left side sits the vertical line with a recess next to it. From there the whole movement shifted drastically to the right in a series of waveform, solely produces from that two round circles I place out of proportion, one above each other. From each iteration of the cascading circle, I slightly tilt it off the original center axis, to create a more dynamic wave like formation.
Reason for placing the obvious circles out of the rectangular face is that I don’t want a uniform B that sits above the face staring straight at me; I want something that has some form of abstract geometry that allows the mind to make the connection to trigger that recognition of the alphabet. Surely a direct placement of the alphabet B will trigger it just as good but where is the fun of it? I believe the capacity of design can renew common perspective to a whole new level of perception. As each pieces I designed, I realize I’m getting so many new ideas and enjoying myself every moment of it.
The uncertain side detailing of Alphabet-B ring
On the side of the Alphabet-B ring I had the circles drew in opposite direction, like waves across pond created by two stones that hits the water. However I’m not sure of that this final version is really what I want. I may be changing the side detailing in time to come. For now I’ll have to wait for the actual ring arrives to make accurate judgment of it. A second thought about this side detailing is that it looks absolute gorgeous when light reflected off the different facet of the curve edges.
To being, I have no idea what I should do with the Alphabet-A ring design. As we all know how does A looks like but, to put it in a ring face is entirely different subject. So I generalize the shape of A to be triangle and proceed to start drawing lines outward leaving uneven steps to all corners of the face.
The variations and the choices
There were a few variations I had made and I chosen this because of its simplicity. At one point I almost turn the triangle into a flower. An interesting notion to entertain me while I the process of designing the Alphabet-A ring. Maybe one day I will work on something relate to flowery sort of design for ladies.
Notice the longest horizon bar line at the bottom the of the triangle, I leave that to suggest an elongate ring face. The rest of the cascading slanting lines that adhere to the triangle side to form most of the texture were left there to capture the light and shadow. I initially thought of a deeper lines cut but, too deep a shadow will start to loose the intended shape and all that glamour of reflective light. Let’s move on to the ring side design.
Alphabet-A ring mysterious lines
The recess lines on the side of the Alphabet-A ring design resemble the shape of an A and suggest the ring is build from some sort of building blocks from ground up. It gives that solid foundation, clearly essential for the first ring design in the line as the first Alphabet ring design.
I cannot wait to send this for printing, I’ll post the update and photo shots of the actual ring once in hand. So I leave it as it is for your pleasure now. Drop me a line if you are free. Cheers!
If you had seen my previous works, you will know they were so much different from each other. I was trying to find my own style. In the process, I found a new obsession that will allow my design to evolve and breed new concept. The Alphabet ring design concept.
This time round is not about the smoothness of the surface or that perfect curve. First, I was captivated by the edges how it catches the light and shadow. This happens after I design Resonance Edge. I move on to produce a few more outline concepts and shaded sketches as you can see from my album here.
I want to deliver the modern sleek design, I kept the lines simple and clean while retaining the principle on each piece. The effect was enormous.

Choosing the frame in Alphabet ring design concept
I was deeply attracted to the Five Pillars framework that I recently posted before the concept of Alphabet ring design. I took the frame of signet ring to start my design. I want to stay away from the conventional round face protruding from the top, instead I go for the rectangular flat on the side, slightly tilted to create an unobtrusive V-shape.
It does leave a certain weight to the finger, the impression that this was cut out of a piece of solid metal was very profound. Because of this, it gives me a lot of space for imagination to craft out unique ring design ideas.
[col span=”1/1″ ]
Of all material I choose brass. Surely I can go for sterling silver and charge more to the price tag, but there is something about the this unique metal character, its colour that reflected light off the surface, that yellowish tone emitting from its surface. With that being said, I also like this copper and zinc infusion slowly age with time due to the brass oxidation process and later to be renew by cleaning aid, once again to be a reborn of new is exciting to work with.
Five Pillars ring design had not cross my mind for awhile since I did the Diamond Frame, let alone designing something entirely so different from my previous approach. The Five Pillars ring design was a surprise to me as much as anybody who had known me from the start. From choosing the frame to the recess-engrave like lines and shapes on the surface was all new from the start.
Searching for the ring frame
Not long ago I had seen somewhere about a ring that have this nice flat top surface, I decided to add a personal touch to it. I elevate the face of the ring higher to a more prominence position. I had design to slice on a v-shape to the side of the ring, to make the bottom more narrow and broaden the top, so as to leave room for finger movement. At this point, I had created the foundation frame work for more future projects. I intent to create a whole series of design base on this frame.
The Five Pillars ring color
The choice of the color is gold. Since gold is the precise color to match the mood of Greek and Egyptian culture. The Five Pillars ring design was inspired by these places where I have found myself wonder in amazement. However, Gold is more expensive to make rather than brass, more to the point, brass does have oxidation. It does age with time and product that rustic tone which is beautiful to me.
In designing the Five Pillars ring, I had gain a lot of experiences like never before. I look forward to create more design and have them upload to my website. There are times where imagined version of the ring to be transfer to software tools for modeling, pose a challenge to the designer. Not that I had never use Rhino 3D before, it is a wonderful tool to use. I was so use to modeling furniture and interior works, creating ring was a passion I found to be very addictive.
